It has been 25 years since a Canadian-based hockey franchise won the Stanley Cup. The Montreal Canadiens were last to do it in 1993. Before then, teams such as the Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers had a stranglehold on the Cup. The upstart Winnipeg Jets are the last Canadian club standing, joining first-year Vegas, Washington and Tampa Bay in hockey’s final four. Economic factors, such as U.S. free-agent dollars, have contributed to the long dry spell. With expansion into warm-weather American cities, only seven of the 31 NHL teams are based in Canada.
President Trump Pushes Bid for US-Led 2026 World Cup On Thursday, Trump threatened countries who were considering lobbying against the bid comprised of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. undefined Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto replied to Trump’s tweet shortly after. The FIFA Congress is set to vote on hosting rights on June 13. Currently, Morocco is the only country competing against North America. According to ESPN, competition to host the 2026 World Cup has increased due to President Trump’s travel ban against mostly Arab countries. Mexico previously hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986, while the U.S. hosted in 1994.

U.S. Women’s Hockey Upsets Canada to Win Olympic Gold Medal The U.S. beat Canada in a shootout in overtime to win their first gold in 20 years. The women from the United States went up 1-0 early before falling behind 2-1 in the second period. The U.S. would then go on to tie in the final period of play before forcing the penultimate shootout at the end of overtime. For Canada, the loss ended a streak of 4-straight gold medals at the Winter Olympics, dating back to 2002.
US Men’s Olympic Hockey Team Loses Shootout The team lost to the Czech Republic in a quarterfinal game at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Wednesday. The final score was 3-2 after the U.S. team was unable to get the puck into the goal. The Czech Republic team is now moving forward to the semifinals. While the men’s gold medal game is set for Sunday, the U.S. women’s team is competing for gold against Canada on Thursday.
Jordan McIldoon of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, was five days shy of his 24th birthday when he was killed in the attack at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. His parents Alan and Angela McIldoon, described Jordan as a “compassionate young man” who lived a life “full of adventures” in a statement released to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. McIldoon also loved country music, and he was rarely seen without his cowboy boots, the statement read. He was also a month shy of finishing his heavy-duty mechanic apprenticeship.
