Henderson Constable Earl Mitchell may face additional charges … stemming from his spending of county funds, sources said. Mitchell was indicted earlier this month on five felony theft and fraud charges … after a Las Vegas Review-Journal story questioned his spending. But grand jury records show even more extensive spending including … an $800 dinner at steakhouse … nearly 200 atm withdrawals mostly at gambling establishments … and even Disneyland tickets. But his attorney plans to ask a judge to dismiss the charges.
Constable Earl Mitchell was elected to service court records, handle evictions and garnish wages … but some of his spending of county funds has raised questions. Despite the county paying him more than $100,000 a year, Mitchell wrote himself $70,000 in checks over the past two years. In 2016, Mitchell withdrew $500 at an ATM at Timbers, a video poker bar Less than 20 minutes later he took out another $500.
One Sunday he withdrew $100 at an ATM at Sunset Station Casino. There was also a $500 tab at this pub in a casino on the strip.
He also spent thousands on restaurant meals, bars and trips to towns where his children live. Mitchell declined an interview to explain why.
Shortly before 6 a.m., a man was approached by two men in the parking lot of a Best Buy at 6950 Arroyo Crossing, near the 215 Beltway and South Rainbow Boulevard. Police said at least one of the two suspects was armed with a handgun. The suspects forced the man into his car and made him drive to an ATM, where he withdrew an unknown amount of money for the suspects, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. David Gordon said. The two men then instructed the victim to drive to a convenience store at 4030 W. Charleston Blvd., where they told him to get out of his vehicle. Police said the suspects fled north on Hinson Street in the man’s car.
