Mark Anderson has been at the Review-Journal since January 1999. He covered UNLV football for 17 seasons before moving to the men’s basketball beat in January 2016, and was president of the Football Writers Association of America in 2016. Anderson returned to the football beat in 2017 and still covers men’s basketball. Before coming to the R-J, he covered UNR football for five seasons at the Reno Gazette-Journal and was the high school sports reporter for the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat from 1988-94. He is a native of Tallahassee and a graduate of the University of Florida.
The NCAA has at least temporarily changed its policy toward legalized sports betting, clearing the way for Las Vegas to bid on championship events such as the Final Four.
UNLV’s women’s golf and volleyball programs were recognized by the NCAA on Wednesday for finishing in the top 10 of their sports for their Academic Progress Rate scores. Both sports had perfect multiyear scores of 1,000.
Tickets for this year’s NBA Summer League are on sale. The event is July 6 to 17 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion.
The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a nationwide ban on single-game legalized sports betting outside of Nevada. That could help Las Vegas’ case to host NCAA championship events, which currently is prohibited.

UNLV shortstop Bryson Stott’s dad played quarterback for the Rebels and his mom was a cheerleader, but he wanted to go elsewhere for college. After his recruiting trip, however, Stott fell in love with UNLV.
UNLV senior defensive backs Jocquez Kalili and Ty’Jason Roberts were put on scholarship Thursday by UNLV football coach Tony Sanchez. They will count against the 2019 recruiting class.
UNLV is coming off a championship in the Mountain West indoor meet. The Rebels are one of the favorites heading into this week’s outdoor meet in Clovis, California.
Former Bishop Gorman four-star cornerback Alex Perry is transferring from Arizona State to play football at UNLV, a source said Monday. Perry played in four games as an incoming freshman last season and didn’t record any statistics.
Warren LeGarie, who runs the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, said he wasn’t concerned about a new event in Sacramento, California. Las Vegas will have all 30 teams this year for the first time.
UNLV dropped to fifth place in the Mountain West after Sunday’s 10-8 loss to San Jose State. The top four baseball teams make the conference tournament.
UNLV hired Eric Nepomuceno to be in charge of compliance for the athletic department. Athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois also has restructured the compliance office, so Nepomuceno will report to her as well as the president’s office.
UNLV will play Valparaiso in the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge on Nov. 28 at the Thomas & Mack Center. This is the final season of the four-year contract between the conferences.
UNLV will be the fourth seed at the NCAA men’s golf regional tournament May 14 to 16 at Ohio State. The Rebels won the regional last season at Purdue.
