Utah scores 11 points in final 1:29, beats Oregon State on field goal

SALT LAKE CITY — Louie Sakoda kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to cap an 11-point rally over the final 89 seconds and give No. 15 Utah a 31-28 victory over Oregon State on Thursday night.

The Utes (6-0) tied the game 28-28 on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Bradon Godfrey and a 2-point conversion run by Brian Johnson with 1:29 to play. Utah’s defense held the Beavers (2-3) to a three-and-out, and the Utes got the ball back to set up the final drive and Sakoda’s game winner.

Utah took possession at its 45 with 1:06 left, and Johnson drove the Utes to Oregon State’s 24, where they called timeout with two seconds left. Sakoda kicked his third field goal of the game, and Utah’s hopes for a Bowl Championship Series berth were still alive — barely.

The win gave the Mountain West Conference a 6-1 record against the Pac-10 this season.

Freshman Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 101 yards and a touchdown for Oregon State, which was coming off an upset victory over then-No. 1 Southern California on Sept. 25.

Rodgers also had 76 receiving yards. He broke a screen pass for 41 yards on third down late in the fourth quarter to set up Lyle Moevao’s 2-yard TD pass to Brady Camp for a 28-20 lead with 2:18 to play.

• Pittsburgh 26, No. 10 South Florida 21 — At Tampa, Fla., LeSean McCoy rushed for two touchdowns and Bill Stull threw for another as the Panthers (4-1, 2-0 Big East) upset the Bulls (5-1, 0-1).

Pitt has beaten its last three ranked opponents, including No. 23 Cincinnati and No. 2 West Virginia last season.

Matt Grothe threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jessie Hester in the fourth quarter to give the Bulls a 22-20 lead. But Pitt came right back to take the lead, covering 60 yards on three plays in a quick drive that ended with a 3-yard run by McCoy.

Stull finished 16-for-27 for 228 yards. McCoy rushed for 142 yards on 28 carries.
