UNLV takes on Hawaii

Set for kickoff

The UNLV football team is set to take the field for its third consecutive home game to open the season. After splitting the first two contests, the Rebels need a victory to carry a winning record into the conference slate that begins next week against Wyoming.

Tonight, the secondary will be tested against Hawaii (2-0). Though June Jones is gone, the Warriors still love throwing the ball and they will do so throughout the game.

One player in UNLV’s secondary to really keep an eye on is Deante Purvis. He was called for a pass interference penalty late in last week’s game that essentially cost the Rebels a win. He was extremely depressed in the locker room and it will be important for him to bounce back. The Rebels won the toss and chose to defer. UNLV will kick off defending the north goal.

Fight Night

Much has been made of the choice sports fans have tonight between purchasing the boxing card or the UFC card on pay-per-view. It’s possible that the best fights of the evening will originate from Sam Boyd Stadium. Each of the last two times Hawaii has played UNLV in this building, the games have been marred by violence between fans in the stands.

Everything has been under control so far, but the game hasn’t kicked off. The problem for UNLV fans is at this point there are probably more Warriors fans in the building, so the numbers would be in favor of the visitors if an all-out brawl broke out.

Injury Update

Omar Clayton is expected to start the game at quarterback for UNLV after suffering a bruised right knee during the second half of the loss to Oregon State. Jason Beauchamp should also see more time after being very limited against the Beavers. Sean Tesoro is the biggest question mark. The left guard, a Hawaii native, will be a game-time decision. If he can’t go, Jason Heath will get the start.

They don’t want to miss a second

There is a pair of Hawaii fans that got to their seats on the east side of the stadium at around 5:30 p.m. At the time, the man and woman were the only people in the stands. They have not moved. It is now nearly two-and-a-half hours later and they have not budged one inch.

Strange choice of music

The Rebel Girls were introduced before the game and did a routine as they normally would, but their choice of music can only be described as odd. They danced to “Dude Looks Like a Lady” by Aerosmith. Why?
