Eager Rebels land another quarterback

When Nick Sherry lost his opportunity to play football for Colorado, UNLV didn’t waste its opportunity to swoop in.

It was the Rebels’ eagerness that impressed the quarterback, who on Wednesday committed to UNLV.

"UNLV was one of the first schools to contact me," Sherry said. "They showed me the most love, and I fell in love with the coaches."

He was one of three new commitments for the Rebels. Safety Brandon Baker (6 feet 2 inches, 180 pounds) of Lancaster (Texas) High School and punter/kicker Chase Lansford (6-3, 195) of Santa Ana (Calif.) College were the others.

Sherry (6-5, 210) originally committed to Colorado, but when the Buffaloes made a coaching change, they withdrew their scholarship offer.

He chose UNLV over Idaho and San Jose State while also drawing interest from Wisconsin and Arizona. Sherry is rated by Rivals.com as a three-star prospect and by Scout.com as a two-star recruit as well as the nation’s No. 102 quarterback.

Last season at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, Calif., he passed for 2,623 yards and 25 touchdowns, with six interceptions.

Sherry is the second quarterback in this recruiting class. The Rebels signed junior college recruit Sean Reilly early, meaning he will go through spring practices. Though Sherry won’t arrive until August, he could compete for the starting spot but is prepared to redshirt.

"It would be another year of school and another year of practice," Sherry said.

Baker said he chose UNLV after also receiving scholarship offers from San Diego State and Tulsa. Scout lists him as a two-star prospect.

Lansford averaged 43.7 yards per punt last season and made 7 of 10 field goals, including a 52-yarder. His father, Mike, confirmed the commitment via e-mail. Mike Lansford was the Los Angeles Rams’ kicker from 1982 to 1990.

Nine recruits, including Baker, will visit UNLV this weekend.

One is running back/linebacker Superiorr Reid (6-2, 200) of Arlington High in Riverside, Calif. He has committed to UNR and has received scholarship offers from Boise State and Idaho. Reid is rated by Rivals as a two-star prospect.

Offensive lineman Patrick Carroll (6-5, 275) of St. Francis High in La Canada, Calif., and wide receiver Devante Davis (6-3, 195) of Houston’s North Shore High are Rivals three-star recruits.

The others scheduled to visit are tight end Tyler Bergsten (6-4, 230) of Phoenix’s Greenway High; offensive lineman Houston Clemente (6-1, 285) of Honolulu’s St. Louis High; safety Kenny Keys (6-3, 200) of San Diego’s Helix High; defensive tackle Alex Lincoln (6-4, 255) of Steele High in Cibolo, Texas; and offensive lineman Josh McNeill (6-6, 285) of Blinn College in Brenham, Texas.
