UNLV football team dismisses Forte, Fletcher, Eppenger

UNLV’s football team has dismissed starting safety Daryl Forte as well as reserves Lafayette Fletcher and Perry Eppenger. Coach Mike Sanford did not provide further details.

Forte started 21 games at safety the past two seasons, and finished third on the team last year with 73 tackles. He also broke up five passes. Forte, who will be a senior next season, might transfer to another school.

Fletcher played defensive back and Eppenger defensive tackle. Both are expected to graduate soon and end their college football careers. Eppenger is a Cheyenne High School graduate.

Also, cornerback Quinton Pointer will miss spring practices because of surgery on his right shoulder on Dec. 15. Spring drills begin March 9.

Quarterback Omar Clayton, who missed the final three games last season because of a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, will participate in the spring but will be limited as he continues to recover. Linebacker Starr Fuimaono, who missed nearly the entire season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, will be held out of contact drills.

Others who could be limited are defensive end Preston Brooks (effects from a car accident), safety Travis Dixon (right shoulder) and tight end Alex Young (mononucleosis).
