San Diego State rolls past Lady Rebels

The UNLV women’s basketball team got outscored 25-5 in the final 10 minutes, losing to host San Diego State 68-50 Wednesday night in a Mountain West Conference matchup.

Shamela Hampton’s layup gave UNLV a 45-43 lead with 10:24 remaining, but the Aztecs went on an 11-0 run and never were threatened from there.

The Lady Rebels (8-18, 4-9 MWC) hit one of their last 15 shots during the cold spell.

Sequoia Holmes led UNLV with 19 points and eight rebounds, and Hampton finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Paris Johnson had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead San Diego State (14-12, 5-9).

• SWIMMING — At Oklahoma City, the UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each set conference records in relays on the opening day of the Mountain West Conference Championships.

The women won the 200-yard medley relay, with the foursome of Amanda Weinbrecht, Kim Bonney, Marina Sandback and Megan Hunt-Higgins clocking 1 minute, 40.23 seconds to set an MWC mark.

The men notched a record in the 800 freestyle relay, winning in 6:29.39 with the team of Richard Hortness, Devin Phillips, Calan Eldridge and Johan Claar.

The men’s team was second in the standings with 96 points, behind Wyoming’s 116. Brigham Young leads the women’s field at 111, with UNLV fifth at 74.

UNLV also won the men’s 200 medley relay. The women’s team took third in the 800 freestyle relay.

• BASEBALL — UNLV gave up three runs in the second inning and five more in the third, losing to Washington State 9-5 at Wilson Stadium.

Xavier Scruggs went 3-for-4, including an RBI triple, and scored for the Rebels (2-3). Anthony Morel also had an RBI triple.

Shea Vucinich went 5-for-5 with four RBIs for the Cougars (4-1), and John Desmarais was 4-for-5 with four RBIs.

• WOMEN’S GOLF — At Tucson, Ariz., UNLV shot its best round of the Wildcat Invitational, at 28-over-par 312, but finished last in the 16-team field with a 99-over 951 total.

Oklahoma State won at 32-over 884, with Southern California and Duke tying for second at 886.

Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst won the individual title at par 213. UNLV was led by Therese Koelbaek, who took 34th at 16-over 229 after shooting 2-over 73 in the final round.
