Hampton, Helms spark women’s basketball win

Shamela Hampton and Erica Helms scored 16 points apiece, and the UNLV women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 66-53 victory over UNR at Cox Pavilion on Friday night.

The Rebels used an 18-2 run to start the second half and pull away from the Wolf Pack. UNLV improved to 12-0 all time at home against UNR.

After the Wolf Pack scored the opening basket of the second half to close within 24-23, UNLV reeled off 10 unanswered points, including the final four by Hampton.

Dellena Criner then hit two free throws for UNR to cut the UNLV lead to 34-25, but the Rebels picked up two free throws from Hampton and back-to-back 3-pointers from Shannon Oberg and Helms to go ahead 42-25 with 13:56 remaining.

The Rebels pushed the lead to 19 points before UNR (1-3) made one final run in the closing minutes.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING — The UNLV men won the 200-yard medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay, and Nick Blank took the 400 individual medley as the Rebels remained in first place in the Nike Cup in Long Beach, Calif.

The UNLV women were fourth after the second of three days. Brigham Young leads.

The women claimed the 800 freestyle relay, and Marva Harpak won the 200 freestyle.
