Summers shines
Former UNLV tailback Frank Summers took a positive step toward possibility getting selected in the NFL Draft with a promising pro day workout.
Perhaps just important was the obvious interest in Summers by the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. They had three representatives — running backs coach Kirby Wilson and two scouts. Wilson said the Steelers are interested in Summers, and are impressed with his ability to catch and play halfback and fulback.
"You get a lot of bang for your buck in this kid," Wilson said.
Summers didn’t disappoint with his testing. He ran 4.55 seconds in the 40-yard dash, bench pressed 225 pounds 30 times, recorded a 34 1/2-inch vertical jump, and had a 9-foot-5-inch long jump.
"I felt great," Summers said. "I was out here competing and gave it all I had. That’s all I could ask of himself."
The Steelers were the only club to have more than one representative. Other teams present were the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In addition to Summers, other UNLV players trying to impress scouts were offensive lineman Johan Asiata, defensive back Lorenzo Bursey Jr., defensive lineman George Fa’avae, wide receiver Casey Flair, defensive back Geoffery Howard, punter Dack Ishii, offensive lineman Sifa Moala, tailback David Peeples, defensive end Thor Pili and tight end Ryan Worthen.
