SECOND QUARTER RECAP
Colorado State executed two long touchdown drives in the second quarter to erase an 11-point deficit and take a 17-14 lead into halftime.
The Rams had drives of 85 and 98 yards in a dominant second quarter.
Gartrell Johnson controlled the first drive and capped it off with a 3-yard scoring run.
He then finished off the second drive with another 3-yard run, but the majority of the work was done by Rashaun Greer. The Mojave High School product caught a 62-yard pass to set up the score.
Johnson has 89 yards and the two scores at the half. Greer has three catches for 129 yards.
The Rams have dominated the offensive statistics, outgaining UNLV 274-123 yards in the first half.
Omar Clayton is 8 of 16 for 76 yards and a score for the Rebels, while Frank Summers has 23 yards on 11 carries.
Colorado State will get the ball first in the second half.
TURN THAT THING OFF
After announcing a penalty in the first quarter, referee Pete Gautreau forgot to turn off his microphone.
The audio remained live for several plays before Gautreau realized his mistake.
THAT’S A FIRST
Wide receiver Ryan Wolfe ran for a touchdown off of an option pitch from Omar Clayton in the first quarter. It was the first rushing touchdown of his career.
Also, a strange statistical oddity came out of the play.
Wolfe was credited with 13 yards, but no rushing attempt because Clayton pitched the ball beyond the line of scrimmage.
Thus, Wolfe officially has zero carries for 13 yards and a score.
ONE KUBIAK DONE
Colorado State junior safety Klint Kubiak suffered a lower right leg injury and has come out of the locker room wearing a boot. He will not return.
Kubiak is the son of Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak. His brother Klay is a backup quarterback on the Rams who is expected to see some action at some point in the game.
EMERGENCY
The first half of the broadcast on The Mountain featured about 20 nonstop minutes of emergency alerts.
It got to be very annoying.
It was also probably about a week late.
Clearly, the emergency signal should have been sent out to rescue UNLV’s defense last Saturday.
ISHII HAVING ANOTHER GREAT GAME
When third-string quarterback Dack Ishii started punting during training camp, the experiment appeared to be a disaster.
Ishii showed flashes of being great, but would hit one off the side of his foot about once in every three tries.
Eventually, he won the job and he has taken a great deal of pride in his punting this season.
It has paid off for both him and the team.
Ishii has been consistently good and occasionally spectacular.
Today, Ishii had a 59-yard punt on his first attempt and followed it up with a 42-yarder that was downed at the Colorado State 2-yard line.
TOO CONSERVATIVE?
Colorado State head coach Steve Fairchild was criticized in his time as offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills for being far too conservative.
Rams fans would probably echo that sentiment right about now.
In the final minutes of the first half, Colorado State had a chance to try to score, but instead got very conservative and let the clock run down near midfield.
The crowd voiced their displeasure as the Rams left the field, though they must be somewhat happy with a halftime lead.
