REBELS PICKED NO. 1 IN MWC

UNLV’s men’s basketball team has been tabbed as the favorite to win the Mountain West Conference by a poll of media members, it was announced at the league’s media day Tuesday in Las Vegas.
The Rebels received 16 of 24 first-place votes and a total of 206 points in the poll. Brigham Young got five first-place votes and 181 points, followed by San Diego State with three and 170.
Utah (148), New Mexico (132), Wyoming (75), Air Force (66), Colorado State (53) and Texas Christian (49) rounded out the poll.
UNLV senior guard Wink Adams was selected as preseason co-player of the year along with Brigham Young’s Lee Cummard.
All five members of the preseason All-MWC team are seniors. Adams and Cummard are joined on the team by Utah’s Luke Nevill, Wyoming’s Brandon Ewing and San Diego State’s Lorrenzo Wade, a Cheyenne High School product.
Also, UNLV guard Tre’Von Willis, a transfer from Memphis, was named preseason newcomer of the year.
The preseason freshman of the year is Phillip McDonald of New Mexico.
