Rebels have early lead
After giving up an early field goal, UNLV scored two touchdowns in just 1:35 and carry a 14-3 lead into the second quarter.
Ryan Wolfe scored on an option pitch to get UNLV on the board, and then Casey Flair caught a touchdown pass from Omar Clayton after Colorado State fumbled the kickoff.
UNLV has the ball inside its own 20 as the second quarter begins.
No faith in the defense?
Most college football teams defer to the second half when they win the coin toss.
UNLV, however, decided to take the ball first in today’s game.
It was a good indication that Mike Sanford had little confidence that his defense could come out and set the tone with an early stop.
It would be difficult to blame him after the unit’s woeful performance against UNR.
Perhaps he knew something.
After forcing a UNLV three-and-out, Colorado State’s first offensive play was a 44-yard completion to Mojave High School product Rashaun Greer that set up an early field goal.
Peeples sees action
Senior running back David Peeples was in on the kick return team to open the game.
It was his first action of the season.
He had been out with a foot injury.
Red zone perfection intact
UNLV has been successful every time it has reached the red zone on offense this season.
That run of success was nearly ended abruptly when Omar Clayton appeared to throw an interception.
Instead, a roughing-the-passer penalty was called on the Rams and UNLV converted a touchdown to stay perfect inside the 20-yard line.
Flair equals record
Casey Flair recorded a catch in the first quarter. It would not have been noteworthy, except for the fact that it was his 41st straight game with a reception.
The streak equals Earvin Johnson’s school record.
Flair, whose 41-game streak represents every game he has played in his career, later caught a touchdown pass in the quarter.
