UNLV women’s tennis team loses to Utah State in Mountain West opener

Utah State ended UNLV’s run of 14 straight opening-round wins in the Mountain West women’s tennis championships, edging the Lady Rebels 4-3 on Wednesday in Albuquerque, N.M.

Eleventh-seeded UNLV (7-17) got victories at the Nos. 3-5 singles slots, with sophomore Paola Artiga topping Kallie Sperry 6-2, 7-6 (6) on a fourth match point after surviving two set points in the tiebreaker at No. 3.

Junior Iren Kotseva defeated Sabrina Demerath 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4, and senior Alexis Garret downed Lexi Turley 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5.

Sixth-seeded Utah State (14-10) faces No. 3 San Jose State in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Friday.
