UNLV women’s golfers drop to 16th at regional

The UNLV women’s golf team struggled in the final round of the NCAA West Regional in Stanford, Calif., shooting 33-over-par 317 to drop from ninth to 16th as its season ended Saturday.

UNLV entered the third round tied for ninth and just two shots out of eighth, with the top eight teams advancing to the NCAA Championships. Therese Koelbaek did what she could to keep the Rebels in contention, shooting 2-over 73, but none of her teammates shot better than 79, with UNLV having to include an 82 and an 83 in its third-round total.

The Rebels finished at 66-over 918, 15 strokes behind eighth-place Texas A&M. Arizona won the regional at 24-over 876, and Virginia’s Calle Nielson and San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert shared medalist honors at 1-over 214.

Koelbaek led UNLV, tying for 20th at 10-over 223.

■ UNLV MEN’S GOLF — At Tucson, Ariz., the Rebels took third at the Mountain West Conference Championship, paced by the second-place individual effort of Eddie Olson.

UNLV shot 4-over 288 in the third round for a 3-under 849 total. Colorado State won at 18-under 834, 13 shots ahead of San Diego State, with the Rams’ Ryan Peterson earning the individual title at 8-under 205.

Olson fired a 4-under 67 in the final round for a 6-under 207 total, and UNLV teammate Derek Ernst (73) tied for fifth at 212.

UNLV, ranked 12th, now awaits word on where it will go for the NCAA Regionals. The field will be announced today.

■ UNLV BASEBALL — The Rebels gave up 12 runs over the first two innings and didn’t recover in a 16-7 loss to Brigham Young at Wilson Stadium.

Jarred Frierson led UNLV (26-20, 10-8 Mountain West Conference) with two homers, including a two-run shot in the fifth, and Kyle Kretchmer also had a two-run blast for the Rebels.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — The Rebels gave up 11 runs over the last three innings in a 14-8 loss to BYU at Eller Media Stadium.

UNLV (30-20, 7-5 MWC) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a three-run homer from Ashli Holland, but the rally fell well short.

■ CSN BASEBALL — At Salt Lake City, College of Southern Nevada split a doubleheader with Salt Lake Community College, losing the opener 8-2 and winning the second game 7-0 to wrap up the regular season in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

In the win, Taylor Jones threw a four-hit shutout, with four strikeouts and one walk. Bryce Harper hit his 23rd home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth, and Trevor Kirk was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Coyotes.

CSN (43-13, 30-10 SWAC) barely avoided getting shut out in the first game, with Marvin Campbell hitting a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.

The Coyotes will be the No. 1 seed and host of the Region XVIII tournament, which begins Wednesday.

■ CSN SOFTBALL — At Twin Falls, Idaho, the Coyotes got swept by College of Southern Idaho, losing the opener 6-5 and the second game 4-3 in eight innings.

CSN fell to 33-20 overall and 29-18 in the SWAC and will be seeded third in the Region XVIII tournament in Salt Lake City, beginning Thursday.
