UNLV women’s golf team struggles, tumbles to ninth at NCAA West Regional

The UNLV women’s golf team fell from sixth to ninth after the second round of the NCAA West Regional in Palo Alto, Calif., and now finds itself in a three-way dogfight for the regional’s last bid into the NCAA Championships.

The Rebels struggled to a 22-over-par 306 Friday for a two-round total of 33-over 601, leaving them in a three-way tie with Texas A&M and host Stanford, two strokes behind Iowa State for the final automatic berth. The top eight teams in the event advance to the national finals.

Alejandra Guacaneme (3-over 145) is tied for seventh individually to lead UNLV.

■ UNLV MEN’S GOLF — The 12th-ranked Rebels shot the day’s low-round of 13-under 271 to move up from fourth to second after two rounds of the Mountain West Conference Championship in Tucson, Ariz.

UNLV has a 36-hole total of 7-under 561 and trails tournament leader Colorado State by four shots.

Derek Ernst (3-under 139) is in third place individually for the Rebels.

■ UNLV BASEBALL — The Rebels beat Brigham Young 9-8 in 11 innings in a Mountain West Conference game at Wilson Stadium, scoring the decisive run on three walks and an error.

Nolan Clark’s sharp ground ball to second base was misplayed, allowing Drew Beuerlein to score from third base for the Rebels (26-19, 10-7 MWC).

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — Ashlii Holland scored from second base on a dropped fly ball in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Rebels edged Mountain West Conference-leading Brigham Young 8-7 at Eller Media Stadium.

UNLV (30-19, 7-4 MWC) overcame the three-home run, six-RBI performance of BYU’s Angeline Quiocho.

■ CSN BASEBALL — The fourth-ranked Coyotes dropped a Scenic West Athletic Association doubleheader to Salt Lake Community College 4-3 and 11-7 in West Jordan, Utah.

Bryce Harper had a two-run home run in the first game for CSN, while Gabe Weidenaar and Trent Cook had solo shots in the nightcap for the Coyotes (42-12, 29-9 SWAC).

■ CSN SOFTBALL — The Coyotes (33-18, 29-16 SWAC) split a doubleheader with College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, losing the opener 6-1 and winning the second game, 13-3.
