UNLV Sports: Rebels baseball hammers Hawaii again

The UNLV baseball team had another explosive offensive night, ripping Hawaii 14-1 Monday at Wilson Stadium for its sixth straight victory.

UNLV got all the runs it needed by scoring twice in the first inning, and the Rebels (10-3) put it away with a nine-run sixth inning to take a 13-1 lead. Joey Armstrong had a three-run triple in the sixth, and Mark Shannon — the Rebels’ starting pitcher — had a two-run single and finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Shannon allowed five hits and a run in seven innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Rebels beat Hawaii 12-4 on Sunday.

■ UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL — Rebels forward Rejane Verin was named Mountain West women’s basketball co-player of the week, sharing the honor with San Diego State’s Courtney Clements.

Verin, a freshman, had a career-high 26 points and added five rebounds and four assists in the Lady Rebels’ 80-63 home win over UNR on Saturday.

■ UNLV WOMEN’S GOLF — The Rebels were in 11th after the first two rounds of the 15-team Bruin Wave Invitational in Woodland Hills, Calif. UNLV shot 60-over 636, 53 strokes behind leader and host UCLA (7-over 583).

Charlotte Brooks and Dana Finkelstein led UNLV at 14-over 158, tied for 36th, with UCLA’s Lee Lopez leading at 2-under 142.
