UNLV roundup: Men’s soccer team holds on for win

Marco Gonzalez scored his third and fourth goals of the season to help UNLV to a 3-2 win over Texas-Rio Grande Valley in a Western Athletic Conference men’s soccer match Friday at Johann Memorial Field.
Timo Mehlich assisted on Gonzalez’s game-opening goal in the 22nd minute and scored his second of the season in the 51st minute to put the Rebels (6-7, 3-1) ahead to stay.
Ilias Kosmidis scored in the 31st minute for the Vaqueros (4-5-2, 1-3-1), who were outshot 11-4.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
At Fresno, Calif., Julia Glaser scored four goals, giving her 11 for the season, to power Fresno State to a 4-1 victory over UNLV.
Sophie Cortes scored her team-best ninth goal of the season 32 seconds into the second half to pull the Rebels (12-4, 4-3 Mountain West) within 2-1.
But Glaser answered on a penalty kick less than three minutes later and added a goal on a header off a pass from Myra Delgadillo two minutes after that.
Anna Crawford assisted on Glaser’s second goal for the Bulldogs (7-5-3, 2-3-2), who matched UNLV’s nine shots.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
At Salt Lake City, Aiwen Zhu and En-Pei Huang won to advance to the singles quarterfinals of the ITA Mountain Region Championships.
Zhu, seeded eighth and ranked 83rd nationally, downed Utah’s Whitney Turley 6-2, 6-3. Huang defeated Utah State’s Sasha Pisareva 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Both of UNLV’s remaining doubles teams lost in the round of 16.
There will be two rounds of singles followed by one round of doubles Saturday, weather permitting.
Members from 19 Western teams are facing off as individuals through Sunday in singles and doubles.
