UNLV roundup: Men’s golf team leads Albuquerque tournament

Shintaro Ban and Harry Hall are in second and third place, respectively, helping the 12th-ranked UNLV men’s golf team to a six-stroke lead through two rounds of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Ban, a senior, paced the 100-player field in the first round with a 4-under-par 68 and followed with a 72 for a 4-under 140, one stroke behind leader George Cunningham of Arizona.
Hall, a junior, is two strokes behind Ban after a 70-72.
The Rebels are at 1-under 575 entering the final round, six shots clear of second-place Washington and 11 ahead of Brigham Young in third.
Also for UNLV, sophomore Yash Majmudar is tied for 14th and 146, sophomore Justin Kim is tied for 39th at 150, freshman Jack Trent is tied for 58th at 152, and freshman J.J. Gresco is tied for 85th at 157.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
At Fertitta Tennis Complex, all seven Rebels players won their opening singles matches, and all three doubles teams advanced during the first round of the Fall Invitational, which features competitors from Long Beach State, Northern Arizona, Washington State, Boise State and Texas-El Paso.
In singles, Aiwen Zhu defeated Northern Arizona’s Hanneke Lodewijks 7-6, 6-0; Anna Bogoslavets defeated Northern Arizona’s Leirene Granville 6-3, 6-2; Jovana Kenic defeated Northern Arizona’s Cora Lynn Von Dungern 6-1, 6-2; and Izumi Asano defeated Texas-El Paso’s Erandi Martinez 7-5, 6-0.
In doubles, Zhu and En-Pei Huang downed UTEP’s Maria Paula Medina and Milena Baigorria 8-2; and Juliet Zang and Asano downed Northern Arizona’s Worthy Goldman and Madison Moore 8-5. Kenic and Mercedes Lopez received a first-round bye.
The semifinals are slated to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the tournament concluding Sunday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
At Albuquerque, N.M., Claire Lynch scored her third goal of the season in the 76th minute to lift New Mexico to a 2-1 win over the Rebels in both teams’ Mountain West opener.
Jessica Nelson scored her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute to open the scoring for the Lobos (6-3), who held a 17-11 edge in shots.
UNLV (8-2) tied it 1 minute, 27 seconds later on Caitlyn Kreutz’s third goal of the season, assisted by Sophie Cortes.
MEN’S SOCCER
At Fullerton, Calif., Ross McPhie scored his fourth goal of the season with a header off a rebound in the 31st minute, and Cal State Fullerton held on for a 1-0 victory over the Rebels.
Alfredo Cortez had three saves for the Titans (5-3-1), who held a 12-7 edge in shots.
Enrique Adame had three saves for UNLV (2-6).
MEN’S TENNIS
At Malibu, Calif., senior Alexandr Cozbinov defeated 63rd-ranked Nebraska-Omaha sophomore Razvan Grigorescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation round of the Oracle ITA Masters.
Cozbinov next faces Christofer Goncalves of New Mexico State on Saturday.
