UNLV men’s golf still second in home event

The UNLV men’s golf team remained second in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, shooting 4-over-par 292 Saturday in the second round.

California held onto first place after a 1-under 287 round for a 3-under 573 total. UNLV was at 579, followed by Texas A&M at 580.

Texas Tech’s Logan McCracken shot par 72 for a 6-under 138 total and a two-shot lead in the individual standings over Texas A&M’s Tyler Dunlap and UCLA’s Pontus Widegren.

Blake Biddle (72) led the Rebels, tied for eighth at 1-under 143, followed by Carl Jonson (70) and Kevin Penner (75) at 1-over 145, tied for 17th.

The 15-team event, which includes 11 of the nation’s top 25 teams, concludes today at Southern Highlands Golf Club, with play beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is free.

■ UNLV BASEBALL — The Rebels scored two runs in the eighth inning to beat Washington State 4-3 at Wilson Stadium.

Marvin Campbell homered to lead off the eighth for UNLV (9-6), and Trevor Kirk added an RBI single for the winning run. Campbell finished 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

The Rebels got their first two runs in the second inning, on a T.J. White RBI groundout and a Scott Tomassetti RBI single. Tomassetti went 3-for-4.

Reliever Mark Shannon (1-2) got the win, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings, with three strikeouts.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — At Long Beach, Calif., the Rebels split two games in the Long Beach State Invitational, losing to Pittsburgh 3-2 in eight innings and riding Amanda Oliveto’s near no-hitter to a 3-0 win over Cal State Fullerton.

UNLV (11-12) led Pittsburgh 2-0 on Samantha Henry’s second-inning RBI triple and Tayler Aleman’s leadoff homer in the fourth. Pitt tied the score with two runs in the fifth and won when Maggie Sevilla scored on an error in the eighth.

Against the Titans, Oliveto threw a one-hit complete game, with one walk, one hit batter and four strikeouts.

Tara Woodall and Elena Fata had back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning, and Korin Cuico had a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

■ CSN BASEBALL — At Twin Falls, Idaho, the College of Southern Nevada swept a doubleheader against Southern Idaho, 7-5 and 5-4.

The Coyotes (17-7, 4-4 Scenic West Athletic Conference) piled up six runs in the first three innings of the opener, then held on after Southern Idaho scored five runs in the sixth inning of the seven-inning game.

Morgan Stotts homered, Cory Welch was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Jordan Van Hoosier was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In Game 2, Chad Whiteaker hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for the winning runs, and he also had an RBI walk in the fifth.

■ CSN SOFTBALL — The Coyotes swept Western Nevada 9-7 and 13-5 at Russell Road Recreation Complex.

Alicia Firelein went 2-for-4 with a homer and a two-run double for CSN (15-17, 10-10 SWAC)) in the opener. In the second game, Desiree Laswell belted a pair of two-run homers, including a bomb that fueled an eight-run sixth inning.
