UNLV baseball team comes up short in opener vs. Sacred Heart

The UNLV baseball team tumbled to Sacred Heart 6-3 on Friday night in the opener of a four-game series at Wilson Stadium.
Sacred Heart trailed 3-1 before scoring four runs in the fourth inning. The Pioneers got one run on an error, followed by a Derick Horn RBI single to tie it at 3. Rebels starter Tanner Peters (5-2) then walked M.J. Shifano with the bases loaded, and Steve Tedesco put Sacred Heart up 5-3 on a sacrifice fly.
Hunter Beaty had a first-inning triple for UNLV (19-12), scoring on a Trent Cook single. In the third inning, Danny Higa had an RBI groundout and Casey Sato an RBI double to cap the Rebels’ scoring.
■ UNLV SOFTBALL — The Rebels piled up 15 hits, then held off a Colorado State rally for a 9-8 Mountain West Conference victory in Fort Collins, Colo.
UNLV (19-13, 1-0 MWC) erased a 3-1 deficit by scoring eight runs from the third through sixth innings. Tayler Aleman had a two-run double to pace a three-run third inning, and Ashli Holland had an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-3.
Jaexie Balilea had an RBI triple and Stefany Valentino an RBI single in the fifth, and Pauline Monreal’s two-run double in the sixth made it 9-4.
Colorado State (7-28, 0-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a Caitla Stem home run.
■ UNLV TRACK AND FIELD — Secoral Yanez paced the Rebels at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational in Los Angeles, taking first in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200.
Yanez clocked 12.32 seconds in winning the 100. Teammate Davina Collins was fifth in the 200 (25.50), just ahead of Yanez (25.54). Kelsey Williams took second in the 400 (55.72).
Talyah Polee was fifth in the heptathlon.
■ CSN BASEBALL — The College of Southern Nevada split a doubleheader with top-ranked Salt Lake Community College, winning 9-4 and losing 8-0 at Morse Stadium.
In the opener, Jordan Stewart had a grand slam in the fifth inning and finished 3-for-4 for the Coyotes (21-17, 10-12 Scenic West Athletic Conference). Bobby Shiroky went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Chipper Smith threw a four-hit complete game, with four walks and four strikeouts in seven innings against the Bruins (34-4, 19-3).
In the second game, CSN netted just two hits against Salt Lake starter Ruddy Acosta, who walked four and struck out 12, with the game scheduled for nine innings but called on the run rule after seven.
