Rebels tie in women’s soccer vs. Wyoming

The UNLV women’s soccer team had its school-record seven-game winning streak snapped. But the news wasn’t all bad Saturday at Johann Memorial Field.

The Rebels now have an eight-game unbeaten streak, playing Wyoming to a 0-0 tie, with neither team able to score through 90 minutes of regulation and two overtimes.

UNLV (8-2-2, 0-0-1 Mountain West Conference) outshot the Cowboys (7-3-2, 0-0-1) 21-7, including 6-0 in overtime and 10-5 in shots on goal, but couldn’t break through. Kylie Wassell earned her fifth shutout of the season for the Rebels with five saves.

■ VOLLEYBALL – UNLV stayed perfect in Mountain West Conference play by sweeping New Mexico 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 at Cox Pavilion.

Sekola Falemaka paced the attack for the Rebels (11-5, 3-0 MWC) with 18 kills, and Daryn Glenn and Stephanie Thelen each had nine kills. Kinsey Caldwell had 32 assists and 12 digs, and Allison Davies totaled 14 digs.

It was the fifth straight win for the Rebels.

■ MEN’S TENNIS – At Tulsa, Okla., UNLV had two players win first-round matches in the prequalifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships. Willie Sublette beat Oral Roberts’ Nathaniel Avery 6-0, 6-3, then lost in the second round 7-5, 6-3 to Drake’s James McKie. Johannes Markel won his opener in a walk-over and played a second-round match late Saturday.

Charlie Alvarado had a first-round bye, then lost to Memphis’ Joe Salisbury, 7-5, 6-3.

■ WOMEN’S SWIMMING – At San Diego, UNLV opened its season with a close loss to San Diego State, 146-143.

Hilary Ego won the 50-yard freestyle for the Rebels, followed by a second-place tie between teammates Rachel Dixon and Julia Fehervari. The Rebels also got wins from Carmen Robb (100 butterfly) and Mariah Skeen (1-meter diving).

UNLV’s 400 freestyle relay squad of Robb, Ego, Fehervari and Dixon also won.

■ MEN’S SOCCER – At Bakersfield, Calif., UNLV lost to Cal State Bakersfield 5-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams.

Nick Marshall gave the Rebels (2-8-1) a 1-0 lead with his 27th-minute goal, on a putback of a Julian Portugal penalty kick. But the Roadrunners (5-1-3) tied it seven minutes later and scored four goals in the second half.

■ CROSS COUNTRY – UNLV won as host of the Desert Invitational at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, finishing with 45 points, nine ahead of second-place Grand Canyon.

Lauren Petersen and Laura Affeld paced the Rebels, finishing second and fourth, respectively, in the 5-kilometer race. Dixie State’s Rachel Young won in 19 minutes, 12.7 seconds, with Petersen 26 seconds back.
