No offense: Rebels fall in twinbill

The UNLV baseball team appeared to have left its bats on the bus Friday, losing a split-opponent doubleheader to Gonzaga and Pacific in Stockton, Calif.

The Rebels lost the seven-inning first game to the Bulldogs 9-3, then were shut out by host Pacific 3-0 in the nine-inning nightcap.

Brandon Bayardi had the best day at the plate for UNLV (4-3), going 4-for-8.

In the opener against Gonzaga (3-2), the Rebels fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and could not recover as the Bulldogs quickly built a 9-0 lead.

Erik VanMeetren singled home a run in the sixth for UNLV, and Patrick Armstrong, Matt McCallister and Justin Jones hit consecutive doubles in the ninth to account for the Rebels’ final two runs.

In the second game, the Tigers scored three unearned runs — one in the fifth and two in the seventh.

■ MEN’S GOLF — UNLV shot 5-over-par 293 to finish in sixth place in the 16-team John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort’s Arnold Palmer Course in Kahuku, Hawaii.

California won the team title for the third straight year with a 54-hole total of 14-under 850. The Golden Bears shot a final-round 4-under to win by 27 strokes. New Mexico finished second at 13-over, followed by Brigham Young at 19-over, and Arizona and Texas A&M tied at 23-over.

UNLV’s three-round total was 25-over 293. Blake Biddle was the Rebels’ top finisher at 6-over 222 after a closing 2-over 74, tying him for 14th. Freshman AJ McInerney tied for 17th at 7-over 223 after a final-round 75.

Cal’s Joel Stalter took medalist honors by eight shots at 12-under 204.

■ MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING — The 25th-ranked Rebels won four events — all in conference-record times — on the second day of the 10-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships in Monterey Park, Calif.

Brigham Young held the team lead with 417 points, followed by UNLV with 412. Wyoming was third with 401.5.

The Rebels’ David Szele captured the 100-yard breaststroke in 53.54 seconds, Cody Roberts took the 100 butterfly in 46.71 and Giacomo Gremizzi won the 400 individual medley in 3:47.07.

UNLV’s quartet of Henrique Machado, Szele, Roberts and Samuel Lameynardi won the 400 medley relay in 3:10.30.

■ WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING — Katelyne Herrington and Carmen Robb won individual events, and UNLV stands in fourth place entering today’s final day of the nine-team Mountain West championships in San Antonio.

The Rebels have 313 points, seven behind third-place Wyoming. San Diego State is the leader with 516.5, while Boise State is second with 360.5.

Herrington was the first Rebel to win at this year’s championships, taking the 100-yard butterfly in 52.55 seconds. Robb then won the 100 backstroke in 53.59.

■ SOFTBALL — The Rebels lost twice in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

UNLV lost to Brigham Young 5-3 and then to No. 11 Louisiana State, 6-1.

Tayler Aleman and Heather Harrison had RBI hits for the Rebels (5-7) in first game, while UNLV’s lone run in the second came on a hit batsman with the bases loaded in the first inning.

■ WOMEN’S TENNIS — The Rebels fell behind 2-0 before sweeping the remaining matches to down previously undefeated Brigham Young 5-2 at Fertitta Tennis Complex.

No. 19-ranked Aleksandra Josifoska beat Desiree Tran 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to pace UNLV (5-3).

■ INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD — The Rebels had 10 members qualify for the finals in six events at the nine-team Mountain West championships in Nampa, Idaho.

UNLV’s Emily Blok posted the top time in both the 60 meters (7.42 seconds) and 200 (23.79). Fellow senior Kelsey Williamson was third in the 800 (2:10.63) and fourth in the 400m (56.08).

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

The Coyotes got stellar pitching by starters Will Morris and John Conquy to sweep a split-opponent, Scenic West Athletic Association doubleheader from College of Southern Idaho and Colorado Northwestern Community College.

In the first game at Morse Stadium, Morris held CSI to five hits, while walking three and striking out eight in a 7-1 victory. Bobby Shiroky had two hits for the Coyotes.

Conquy allowed two hits, walked one and struck out 11 in CSN’s second-game victory over Colorado Northwestern at Burkholder Park.

Cory Welch supplied two hits and an RBI and Evan Van Hoosier had a triple and two RBIs for the Coyotes (15-5, 3-0 SWAC).
