Men’s golf team falls to 23rd

The 15th-ranked UNLV men’s golf team dropped to 23rd Friday after the second round of the NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, Wash.

The Rebels, tied for 11th after the first round, shot a second-round 23-over-par 311 and are at 36-over 612 entering today’s final round. The top 10 teams will qualify for the NCAA Tournament from May 28 to 31 in West Lafayette, Ind.

Southern California shot 5-under 283 and took the lead at 2-under 574, five shots ahead of Oregon. Wisconsin is 10th at 594.

Senior Matt Kinsinger has UNLV’s best score, but he shot a 7-over 79 and fell from 19th to 74th at 8-over 152. Seung-su Han and Eddie Olson are tied for 87th at 154, Brett Kanda is tied for 96th at 155 and Ji Moon is tied for 104th at 156.

BASEBALL — The Rebels defeated Air Force 8-4 in Colorado Springs, Colo., to snap a six-game losing streak.

Rance Roundy went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs for UNLV (21-34, 9-14 Mountain West Conference), and Anthony Morel went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Jesse Wight went 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

TRACK AND FIELD — UNLV’s Monique Humphries broke her school record in the hammer throw at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.

Humphries finished fourth with a throw of 173 feet 7 inches, worth the last-place Rebels’ only five points of the meet.

Jennifer Shearer ran a 37:22.85 in the 10,000 meters, the sixth-fastest time in UNLV history, and finished 10th.

The Rebels’ Lekeisha Lawson (100, 200 meters), Lauren Johnson (100, 200) and Brittney Bullocks (400) qualified for today’s finals.
