Lady Rebels guard Bell will redshirt to continue recovery from knee surgery

UNLV women’s basketball player Mia Bell, a third-team All-Mountain West Conference selection last season, will redshirt the 2012-13 season.

Lady Rebels coach Kathy Olivier said Bell, a senior guard, will sit out to continue recovering from knee surgery last summer. The Las Vegas native was second in the MWC in assists last year at 4.0 per game and fourth in steals (1.94), while averaging 9.2 points.

■ MEN’S SOCCER – UNLV had three players earn All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors. Salvador Bernal, the league’s newcomer of the year in 2011, was a first-team selection after scoring a team-high 19 points (seven goals).

Nick Marshall, an MPSF first-teamer in 2010 and honorable mention in 2011, was a second-team choice following a 13-point season. Defender Mike Mota was an honorable mention selection.

■ WOMEN’S SWIMMING – UNLV’s Jessica Heim was named Mountain West co-swimmer of the week. Heim won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle, and also swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team in the Rebels’ home win over Brigham Young.
