Freshman Koelbaek takes lead

UNLV freshman Therese Koelbaek took over the individual lead and lifted the Rebels golf team into second place Friday after the second round of the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, Calif.

Koelbaek fired a 4-under-par 68 and is at 7-under 137. She has a three-stroke lead over Arizona State’s Azahara Munoz.

UNLV shot 290 Friday and is at 2-over 578, seven shots behind Southern California entering today’s final round.

The Rebels’ Tonya Choate is tied for eighth at even-par 144; Natasha Krishna is tied for 36th at 149; Kasi Lee is tied for 61st at 152; and Alejandra Guacaneme is tied for 68th at 153.

The top eight teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships from May 20 to 23 in Albuquerque, N.M.

WOMEN’S TENNIS — The 37th-ranked Rebels lost to No. 18 Pepperdine 4-0 in the first round of an NCAA regional in Los Angeles, their sixth straight NCAA Tournament loss.

UNLV, which had won eight straight matches, finished the season 17-9.

The Rebels’ double team of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva, ranked 35th, had their 10-match winning streak snapped, falling to the 11th-ranked team of Sylvia Kosakowski and Bianca Dulgheru, 8-3.

Gantcheva, a senior ranked 36th in singles, will compete in the NCAA Championships this month in Tulsa, Okla.

BASEBALL — Reliever Adam Moser gave up a double and a triple with two outs in the 10th inning as UNLV lost to New Mexico 6-5 at Wilson Stadium.

The Rebels (20-30, 8-11 Mountain West Conference) had tied the game 5-5 on Braden Walker’s two-out single in the ninth.

J.J. Sferra had three of UNLV’s 13 hits, and Rance Roundy, Michael Brenly and Jarred Frierson had two apiece.

The Lobos improved to 30-20 and 14-5.

SOFTBALL — UNLV fell to 19th-ranked San Diego State 9-0 in five innings at Eller Media Stadium.

Christina Ross pitched a one-hitter for the Aztecs (42-15, 14-5 MWC), giving up a two-out triple in the third inning to Brittany Bolinger.

Traci Odegard took the loss for the Rebels (25-39-1, 5-14). She allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and two walks.
