Former UNLV golfer Adam Scott withdraws from Rio Olympics

Former UNLV golfer Adam Scott will not compete in the 2016 Olympics, according to ESPN.

“My decision has been taken as a result of an extremely busy playing schedule around the time of the Olympics and other commitments, both personal and professional,” Scott said in a statement released by his management company to ESPN. “I have informed the Australian team captain and relevant authorities, who are understanding of my position, and I wish the Australian Olympic team the very best of luck in Rio.”

The Australian spent a year and a half at UNLV starting in 1998 before leaving to pursue professional golf. Since then, he has 13 PGA Tour victories, including the 2013 Masters.

As the seventh-ranked golfer in the world, Scott would have been automatically eligible for the Olympics.

The Olympic golf competition, which will be held from Aug. 11-14, falls during the PGA tour schedule. This is the first time golf will be played in the Olympics since 1904.

Last week Vijay Singh of Fiji became the first golfer to withdraw his name from the Rio Games.
