Big eighth inning powers UNLV baseball past Lobos

Mark Shannon’s two-run homer capped a five-run eighth inning surge that powerd the UNLV baseball team past New Mexico 8-7 on Saturday at Wilson Stadium.

After the Lobos (7-10, 1-1 MW) put up three runs in the top of the eighth to go up 6-3, the No. 21 Rebels (15-4, 1-1) responded in the bottom with RBI singles from T.J. White and Joey Swanner, followed by a Justin Jones sacrifice to tie it at 6.

Shannon then blasted his first homer of the year to make it 8-6.

■ UNLV MEN’S GOLF — At Tucson, Ariz., the Rebels were in 10th after the first two rounds of the National Invitational Tournament. In a 16-team field featuring five top-20 teams, UNLV was at even-par 576, 17 strokes behind leader and No. 13 Oklahoma State.

Kevin Penner paced the Rebels at 1-under 143, tied for 19th. Texas Christian’s Julien Brun led at 11-under 133.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — At San Diego, the Rebels split two games at the San Diego Classic II tournament, losing to Bryant 2-1 and beating Buffalo, 8-3. Amanda Oliveto threw a complete game in the win, allowing eight hits and three walks, with five strikeouts.

Tayler Aleman went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored against Buffalo. Tayler Van Acker went 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored for UNLV (11-17), and Pauline Monreal was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

■ UNLV SWIMMING AND DIVING — At Air Force Academy, Colo., the Rebels’ Maraea Skeen took 16th on the platform at the NCAA Zone E Diving Regional.

■ CSN BASEBALL — The College of Southern Nevada beat the College of Southern Idaho 5-4 and 2-0 at Morse Stadium to complete a four-game series sweep.

CSN (23-6, 11-1 Scenic West Athletic Conference) scored four runs in the third inning of the opener, including a three-run double from Bobby Shiroky, to take a 5-0 lead. The Coyotes held on after giving up four runs in the fourth.

Thomas Pannone threw a seven-inning one-hitter to complete the sweep, striking out 11 and walking one.

■ CSN SOFTBALL — At Carson City, the Coyotes split a doubleheader against Western Nevada College, with CSN (20-15, 13-11 SWAC) rebounding from a 4-1 loss in the opener to take the second game, 10-3.
