FIRST SCRIMMAGE OF SPRING SET FOR FRIDAY

The UNLV football team’s first scrimmage of spring is Friday morning, and coach Mike Sanford said Wednesday he is especially interested to see how the backups perform.

Most starters will work only briefly during the 60-plus plays of the scrimmage, which begins at about 10 a.m. at Rebel Park and is open to the public.

"We’ve got a lot of guys where we’re making decisions at a lot of different positions," Sanford said. "We’ve got to find out some things, too, where some guys that are twos are playing well against the twos. We’ve got to find out if they can play good against the ones.

"I talked to (the players) about it today. We are not a team that’s putting in an offense or defense. We’re a team that needs to perfect what we’re doing, and everything we’re doing isn’t just for spring practice, it’s for the fall."

The Rebels also scrimmage April 3, and their spring game is April 17. Assistant coaches drafted teams in prior years, but Sanford said the Rebels might do things differently this time.

"I’ve got to kind of see where we’re at and decide what the best thing is," Sanford said. "Every year’s different. You’ve got to look at what’s best for the team you’ve got."

STANDING OUT

Left tackle Matt Murphy (offense) and linebacker Jason Beauchamp (defense) wore the black jerseys Wednesday, which are awarded to the top players from the previous practice. The nominees were tailback Chris Brogdon, cornerback Will Chandler and linebackers Nate Carter and Ronnie Paulo.

Sanford said wide receiver Phillip Payne caught his eye in Wednesday’s practice.
