CYCLONE SPECIAL TEAMS AREN’T SO SPECIAL

Iowa State true freshman kicker Grant Mahoney made just 1 of 4 field goal attempts against archrival Iowa last week. The conditions were wet and two of the snaps were not great, but that doesn’t speak well for the unit as a whole, and it gets worse for the Cyclones.

They also allowed Iowa to return a punt for 81 yards in the fourth quarter that essentially put the game away.

If UNLV wants to defeat its second straight BCS-conference opponent, special teams may be an area where the Rebels can find an advantage.

Remember, UNLV did make a field goal in overtime and then blocked Arizona State’s attempt at an equalizer.
