UNLV baseball team picked for third in Mountain West

UNLV’s baseball team was picked third in the Mountain West preseason poll.

The Rebels received one first-place vote and 40 points.

New Mexico and San Diego State tied for first in the voting by the league coaches, each receiving three first-place votes and 43 points.

Three Rebels were selected to the all-conference team — sophomore outfielder Joey Armstrong, senior designated hitter/utility player Patrick Armstrong and junior pitcher Erick Fedde.

Joey Armstrong hit .324 last season, and was the only Rebel to appear in every game.

Patrick Armstrong led UNLV with a .373 average, adding seven home runs and 40 RBIs.

Fedde, also a preseason second-team All-American by Baseball America, went 7-3 and a 3.92 ERA.

UNLV, which went 37-20 last year, opens this season at 6:05 p.m. Friday against Central Michigan at Wilson Stadium.
