The best high school dunker in the nation is coming to UNLV
The McDonald’s High School All-American Game dunk contest that took place on Monday night in Chicago might as well be rendered null and void. (Sorry, Stephen Zimmerman. You did well for a big man.)
That’s because Derrick Jones — Archbishop Carroll (PA) senior forward, UNLV commit and rim-rocker extraordinaire — didn’t take the court until 48 hours later, nearly 200 miles away, in Carmel, Ind.
There, in the American Family Insurance High School Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championship, Jones added to his growing legend by dunking over four(!!!) top high-school basketball prospects, including 6’ 2” Donovan Mitchell, 6’ 7” Tevin Mack and 6’ 5” Notre Dame signee Rex Pflueger, who took this amazing video.
“I jumped over two people at the (Under Armour Elite 24 in August) and was at dunk contest at Memphis and jumped over three,” Jones told USA Today. “I just thought about four today and thought, ‘Why not?’ and just did it.”
The dunk contest will air in its entirety on CBS Sunday at 12:30 p.m. here in Las Vegas. Spoiler alert: Jones wins … with a perfect score.
Monday’s aerial extravaganza was just another day in the life of the future Rebel, who seems to pop up on YouTube every few weeks, destroying rims and souls. Indoor or outdoors, whether it’s a dunk contest, all-star game or high school playoff game, Jones has thrown down.
Just for good measure, he led Carroll to the Pennsylvania State Championship game, where he put up 30 and 18 in a narrow loss.
