TOO CONFUSING

What happened to just drawing up a bracket and playing things out? The Olympic Games need to get a tad simpler in some ways.

Take softball, which uses the Page playoff system once semifinals are set. It’s a format used primarily in curling (which makes even less sense that softball would adopt it), where the final four teams are seeded using a round-robin design and then playing a single-elimination and double-elimination tournament to determine the winner.

    Whatever that means.

All I know is, the U.S. beat Japan in the morning and advanced to the gold-medal game Thursday. Japan then went back into the bracket and beat Australia later in the evening, which had earlier beaten Canada.

The end result: The U.S. and Japan play for gold, Australia has been awarded the bronze and who the heck knows what happened to poor Canada.
