Jim Fassel thinks back on it now and remembers all the eerie feelings after the world changed forever. The United Airlines plane waiting to depart as one he was traveling on landed in Newark early that September day. United Flight 93. Sitting at the next terminal. Loading passengers, all of whom would be dead within a few hours. Just waiting to depart.
It didn’t sound any better a few days later. It didn’t play any less disgusting on YouTube. It wasn’t any less racist, any less hateful, any less ignorant. As for the apology Floyd Mayweather Jr. subsequently released via another video, well, there are kiddie pools all around Summerlin that aren’t as shallow.
Jim Livengood wanted most to see a football team with a brain, a side that while not as good and unquestionably not as big or physical as its Midwest opponent, at least gave the appearance of having a clue.
ELY — It was the kind of ultimatum you hear often from father to son: If you don’t want to play football, fine. But for such a physical kid, you’re going to do something.
