DON’T BELIEVE IT

The USOC tried to put on a happy face about the fact China will win more gold medals than the Americans at these Games.

"This is our most successful engagements in Olympic Games ever," said USOC CEO Jim Scherr. "We are succeeding in virtually every team sport and won’t abandon those sports to earn medals in individual sports.

"We came back up in Athens with overall medals from where we were in Sydney and we think we will come back up here from Athens. We’ve improved. We don’t measure the team solely on gold medals."

Of course they do, because that’s what world powers at these Games do. They should. If you are Norway, it’s about medals. If you are the U.S. or China or Russia or Great Britain or Germany, it’s about gold.

As of 1:40 a.m. Sunday, the gold tally read: China 49, U.S. 34.
