DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?

One word: amazing.

They say the 100-meters men’s track final is the most electric event of any in the Olympics, and what we just witnessed in the Bird’s Nest proves that point tenfold.

Usain Bolt of Jamaica ran a world-record 9.69 seconds, winning in such comfortable fashion that he looked behind with 30 meters left, slapped his chest and literally jogged the final seven strides.

Had he sprinted the entire way, you would be looking at a time frighteningly close to a 9.5. And that is simply too unfathomable to consider.

The world’s fastest man? That would infer the guy is human.

Think of the atmosphere at a huge Las Vegas fight and times it by 20. The buildup for the race began minutes before the start gun with a slow clap.

Then came the flashbulbs. Then came the roar.

Then came the most dominant 100 meters final run since Ben Johnson 20 years ago. Yep, you can’t watch what Bolt just did and not mention the D-word.

I’m sorry, but Jamaica has fewer than 2.8 million people and they have three of the eight 100-meters finalists at the Olympics? People just can’t be that naive not to wonder what in the world is happening there when it comes to doping and its track athletes. To suggest otherwise is burying your head in sand deeper than your average Jamaican beach.

The final didn’t include U.S. star Tyson Gay, who failed to qualify after finishing fourth in his semifinal heat in 10.05.

Gay was visibly not 100 percent as he suggested in a news conference earlier this week. He favored his left leg during warmups and then again after a false start.

"I don’t want to make any excuses," he said. "I got off to a pretty good start. The (injury) set me back a little in training. My leg feels good. I just couldn’t get my rhythm back. I was running as fast as I could. It just wasn’t there."

It was for Bolt, who easily finished ahead of silver medalist Richard Thompson (9.89) of Trinidad and Tobago and U.S. sprinter Walter Dix (9.91), who took bronze.

Darvis Patton, the other American to qualify for the final, was last in 10.03.

It was too easy for Bolt. It was ridiculous.
