Silverado winning streak at six

Players react to losses in different ways. Some get sad, others get angry. Silverado’s Wade Collie is thankful.

Since suffering a 75-67 loss to Liberty on Dec. 20, Collie and his Skyhawks teammates have been unbeatable.

On Friday, Silverado gained a 81-69 victory at Coronado, its sixth straight win since the Liberty loss. The Skyhawks are 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the Southeast Division, a half-game behind first-place Foothill.

Collie had 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to lead the win over the Cougars.

“That loss to Liberty really got us going,” he said. “Losing to our rivals is never good, so that got us going in the right direction again. So I thank them for beating us.”

Collie led the Skyhawks early against Coronado and point guard Ali Sabra led them late. Collie hit four of his first five shots and scored 11 points in the first quarter, and Sabra scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half. He also had six assists.

In between, wings Joe Spero and Jimmy McMurrin combined to hit six 3-pointers when Coronado paid too much attention to Collie and Sabra.

Spero finished with 16 points, McMurrin 12 and Mike Wadsworth 11 as Silverado’s starters accounted for all of the team’s points.

“It’s big for the team,” Collie said. “We’re going to need them later on. You can’t win anything with just two players.”
