Sewald’s quality pitching lifts Gorman to tournament title

Even the best high school baseball teams sometimes run out of pitching at the end of a tournament.

But that didn’t happen to Bishop Gorman on Saturday.

Playing their fifth game in four days, the Gaels still had another quality arm in Paul Sewald, who threw a five-hitter to lead Gorman to a 13-2 win over Jordan (Utah) in the championship game of the Bishop Gorman/Calvary Chapel Easter Bash at Hadland Park.

“One of the things we’ve always said with our club is we run pretty deep with our arms,” Gorman coach Chris Sheff said. “And as we get deeper in tournaments, we think it helps us.”

Sewald allowed two runs on three hits in the first inning before settling in and shutting down the Beetdiggers, ranked 15th in the nation by Baseball America.

Both runs came on a controversial two-out triple by Ben Gollaher. Gollaher lofted a fly ball down the right-field line. The ball dropped, but Gorman’s coaches argued that it came down in foul territory.

The Gaels, ranked 16th by Baseball America, tied the game in the third, then scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Jeff Malm’s three-run double highlighted the fourth.

Malm had two doubles, and Scott Dysinger was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs for Gorman. Sewald helped himself with two hits and two RBIs.

Valley 17, West Jordan (Utah) 16 — At Valley, the Vikings rallied from a 10-0 deficit to defeat the Jaguars.

Larry Valdes went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a double for Valley, which scored nine runs in the sixth inning to take a 17-14 lead.

Churchill County 8, Eldorado 7 — At Eldorado, the Greenwave scored eight runs in the first three innings and held on to beat the Sundevils.

Ryan Taylor was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Eldorado.

Cypress Bay (Fla.) 9, Cimarron-Memorial 8 — At Cimarron, the Lightning scored two runs in the top of the eighth to beat the Spartans.

Travis Feiner had two singles, a double and two RBIs for Cimarron.

Del Sol 10, Taylorsville (Utah) 8 — At Del Sol, Ryan Klorman was 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Dragons.

Del Sol 14, Pahrump Valley 4 — At Del Sol, Joe Keiser was 2-for-3 with three RBIs as the Dragons won in five innings.
