Raiders honor Las Vegas shooting victims with helmet decals, moment of silence
OAKLAND, Calif. — From their current hometown, the Raiders honored their future one.
All 46 players in uniform Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens wore a helmet decal that read “Vegas Strong.” The message, whose lettering resembled that of the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, overlapped with a concentric heart logo. It appeared on the back-left position of each Raiders helmet during the game at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
One week earlier, Las Vegas was the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. A gunman on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel fired on a crowd attending a country music festival, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more.
On Monday, the Raiders donated $50,000 to the Las Vegas Victims’ Fund. The NFL Foundation matched the donation and contributed an additional $50,000 to the American Red Cross.
Before the national anthem on Sunday, the Raiders held a moment of silence. During the anthem, the name of each person killed was shown on the stadium’s videoboard.
Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson wore blue cleats that read: “Pray for Vegas.”
