Things can’t get much worse for the Philadelphia Phillies, who entered Thursday with baseball’s worst record (22-45) and mired in a nine-game losing streak.
Everything came to a head in Philadelphia’s 19-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday in which outfielder Jeff Francoeur pitched two innings, throwing a whopping 48 pitches.
When pitching coach Bob McClure visited the mound in the eighth and inexplicably didn’t pull Francoeur from the game, veteran infielder Chase Utley berated McClure for leaving Francoeur in well past his limit.
Incredibly, in these advanced technological times we live in, the reason McClure didn’t replace Francoeur is because he couldn’t contact the bullpen because the bullpen phone was off the hook.
McClure’s method to contact the bullpen and bring a fitting end to the debacle?
Waving a white towel.
