Las Vegas will host 2015 World Wrestling Championships

Las Vegas will host the 2015 World Wrestling Championships, the first qualifying event for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The championships will be held in September 2015 at Orleans Arena.

FILA, the international wrestling federation, announced on Tuesday that it picked Las Vegas over Panama City; New Delhi; Tehran, Iran; and Sochi, Russia, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

“Las Vegas has a long and storied history with amateur wrestling dating back to the 1970s,” Las Vegas Events president Pat Christenson said in a statement. He noted that the city hosted the 2008 U.S. Olympic team trials, the 2007 world team trials, the Cliff Keen Invitational and the U.S. national championships.
