Terrible’s Primm 300 pivotal in points races

The SCORE desert racing series’ three-month layoff ends Saturday with the 13th annual Terrible’s Primm 300, and with only five points races this year, the event will play a more significant role in determining season champions.

The Primm race, which will be run behind Buffalo Bill’s, off Interstate 15 south of Las Vegas, is the fourth event of the year with only the Nov. 20-22 Baja 1000 remaining after this weekend.

Going into the race, Las Vegan B.J. Baldwin, who will drive solo in Primm, is first in the overall and Trophy Truck standings. He leads by 21 points over Mark Post of Laguna Beach, Calif., and co-driver Rob MacCachren of Las Vegas.

B.J. Richardson leads fellow Las Vegan Pat Dean in Class 1 by two points.

Garron Cadiente of Mesa, Ariz., is the defending overall and Trophy Truck champion in Primm.

The field will be split into two groups. The first starts at 6 a.m. Saturday, followed at 1 p.m. by the second group, which will include Trophy Trucks and Class 1 unlimited vehicles.

The faster categories will complete four laps of the 72-mile course. …

The team of Rick Johnson and Brian Sallee of Barstow, Calif., drove their 1400 Trick Truck to the overall title in the 455-mile Las Vegas to Reno race in the Best in the Desert Series event Aug. 23 and 24.

• DRAG RACING — Giuseppe Gentile and Carl Cannavo didn’t mind waiting until 2:30 a.m. Sunday to finish the Pacific Street Car Association’s Labor Day Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s dragstrip.

Gentile of Sun Valley, Calif., used the fastest run of the night (228.50 mph) to beat John Mihovetz of Ontario, Calif., to win the Pro Street class. Cannavo of Las Vegas defeated Californian Jerry Hors to win Bracket 1.

Southern Nevadan Jon Irving won the Trophy class. …

Winners last weekend in NHRA Jr. Dragster competition at LVMS were Branda Seraphine (Junior Lightning), A.J. Fernandez (Junior Thunder), Ralphie Ramirez (Junior Novice), Caden Willett (Junior 8-9), Brooke Wakenhut (Junior 10-12), Brianna Leigh Blinzler (Junior 13-14) and Brittany Johnson (Junior 15-17).

• BULLRING — The NASCAR All-American Series event originally scheduled for last weekend will be Saturday night at the LVMS Bullring. A power outage forced postponement of the races last weekend.
