Father honors son at Bullring

Chuck Trickle spends several hours a month at a racetrack, but he doesn’t have to take along his helmet.

The 2003 Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Bullring track champion spends track time with 6-year-old grandson Chris Trickle, who competes in go-karts and Quarter Midgets.

The youngster was named for Trickle’s late son, Chris Trickle, who was 25 when he died in 1998 about 13 months after an unknown assailant shot him. He died from complications to injuries he had sustained in the shooting.

On Saturday night, Trickle, 62, will make his annual foray to the Bullring with his helmet to compete in the annual Chris Trickle Father’s Day Special, an event named to honor the memory of his son.

“I’ll keep doing it until I can’t fit in the car,” Trickle said of driving in the twin 30-lap features.

His son was a budding driving star on the West Coast when he was shot along Blue Diamond Road near Interstate 15.

Trickle and crew chief Mike Haslim tested the popular No. 70 Chevy on Friday night.

“I don’t know what was pushing us, but we were fast,” Trickle said, adding his practice ended early when the engine blew. …

Las Vegan Jeremiah Wagner, 14, ranks second nationally in the Legends Cars Semi Pro division after winning his first Legends title Saturday at the Bullring. He won the Semi Pro championship at the Bullring last year as a rookie.

• MOTOCROSS — Ricky Carmichael will go for his 100th career title this weekend in Budds Creek, Md., in the AMA Motocross Series.
