Drag racing event headed for speedway

The engines will continue to roar this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Pacific Division event is set for today through Sunday at the dragstrip with more than 750 of the top NHRA Sportsman teams competing.

On Saturday night, the three-eighths-mile Bullring has put together two of its most popular events.

The night will include the Keith Danser Kids’ Candy Toss, a demolition derby and a full slate of racing in the NASCAR All-American Racing Series.

All youngsters will get free candy and have a chance to win prizes with Danser returning to oversee the event he started several years ago at the track.

• OPEN WHEEL — Paul Tracy is recuperating at his Summerlin home after fracturing a vertebra in his lower back during practice Saturday for the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The 38-year-old Tracy, the oldest and winningest active driver in Champ Car, was injured when his car slid nose-first into a concrete barrier. He is expected to be sidelined for about eight weeks.

Oriol Servia has replaced Tracy in the Forsythe Championship Racing entry. He finished second Sunday.

• DESERT — Championship Off Road Racing opens its seven-race series this weekend at Antelope Valley in Lancaster, Calif.

The series has added a Nov. 3-4 event for this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Bullring. …

The Terrible’s Town 250 is set for April 29 in Pahrump. The Best in the Desert Racing Association event will use a 250-mile loop course. …

Three of the top four overall points leaders in the SCORE Desert Series are from Southern Nevada.

Las Vegan B.J. Richardson, 41, is in first place with his Class 1 Chevy-powered Bunderson open-wheel desert race car.

Tied for second are Southern Nevadan SCORE Trophy-Truck racers B.J. Baldwin and Rob MacCachren, who shares driving duties with team owner Mark Post of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Rookie Robert Ross of Chula Vista, Calif., also is tied for second.

The next SCORE race is the June 1-3 Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico.
