Dirt track legend set to compete at LVMS

Dirt track racing legend Sammy Swindell will compete in Saturday night’s Sprint and Midget Doubleheader at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway dirt track.
Swindell, who turns 52 today, will compete in the USAC Midget race on the half-mile dirt track, which also will host a California Racing Association nonwing sprint car race.
Swindell, who will drive a Toyota-powered car owned by NHRA Funny Car driver Cruz Pedregon, won his 267th World of Outlaws A Main feature in 2006 at LVMS. He is a three-time Outlaws season champion.
Pedregon will drive his Funny Car in the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at the dragstrip and will field a three-car team that includes reigning USAC National Midget champ Jerry Coon Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., and Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif.
The event will follow completion of the final rounds of qualifying for the NHRA Powerade Drag Racing event. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with racing to begin at 6:15.
• NASCAR — Mike David, 40, of Modesto, Calif., won the NASCAR Grand National West Series title by finishing 14th on Saturday in the Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California. Las Vegan Alex Haase was 20th in the 40-car field.
• SPEED TRUCKS — Victor Pfluger won Saturday night’s ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series finale in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., giving him the season championship.
Las Vegan Steve “Bear” Rezsnowiecki fell one spot to fifth in overall points after qualifying seventh and finishing last in the 18-truck field. The 15-year-old previously clinched the top rookie honor.
• OFF ROAD — Championship Off Road Racing will compete next weekend for the first time at the Herbst family’s new Las Vegas International Off Road Raceway complex behind Buffalo Bill’s in Primm.
The Nov. 3-4 event will be the season finale in the Lucas Oil Series.
