Mojave knocks off No. 1 Western
September 15, 2007 - 9:00 pm
A sustained rushing attack and solid game plan left Mojave in a position to need only to run out the clock to preserve an upset of top-ranked Western on Friday night.
That task was made much more difficult by a non-functioning scoreboard at Mojave High School.
The teams were left playing an old-school game with no working clock or scoreboard throughout the contest, but the Rattlers escaped with a 28-24 victory, much to the relief of the restless home crowd.
"We had a coach standing right next to the (line judge) that was on our sideline to keep tabs on the time," Mojave coach Tyrone Armstrong said. "But it made things real rough on us. Clock management was just thrown out the window."
Reggie Powers ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He was the most effective part of a balanced Rattlers attack that kept the clock moving and kept the explosive Warriors offense off the field.
Unranked Mojave (3-0) ran 66 offensive plays to just 35 for Western (2-1). The Rattlers ran the ball 61 times, compared with 15 rushing attempts for the Warriors.
It was all part of the plan.
"They have a high-powered offense, and when you don’t touch the ball much, it makes it tough," Armstrong said. "I think their timing was off and then our defense did a good job of putting pressure on (Western quarterback J.D.) Buonantony."
The Warriors were able to get their offense going on a few occasions, but their last drive never really got started.
Trailing 28-18, Western drove 95 yards in just six plays and scored on a 25-yard pass from Buonantony to Ryan Patterson. The Warriors then forced a three-and-out and got the ball back at midfield but couldn’t get a first down and gave the ball back to the Rattlers.
Throughout each of the final two Western drives, the Mojave fans were chanting, "How much time?"
They finally got their answer when the Rattlers got the ball back and the referee indicated that less than two minutes remained in the game.
Mojave began executing the game plan from the opening kickoff. The Rattlers had the ball for all but one play in the first quarter, running 21 times and passing once on two long touchdown drives.
Western’s only play of the quarter was a 70-yard touchdown run by Reggie Bullock. The Warriors star finished with 89 yards on just seven carries.
Deandre Taylor ran for a touchdown and caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Jordan Canon on a fourth-down play in the third quarter as the Rattlers built their lead. Canon added a rushing score.
