Welterweight Maia hands LaFlare first loss on UFC card in Brazil

Welterweight contender Demian Maia took Ryan LaFlare to the ground early and often on his way to a unanimous decision Saturday in the main event of an Ultimate Fighting Championship card in Rio de Janeiro.

Maia was in dominant position on the mat for extended periods of each of the first four rounds in handing LaFlare his first career loss.

Also on the card, Erick Silva submitted Josh Koscheck in the first round of a welterweight bout.

It was the final fight on the contract of Koscheck, who has competed in the UFC since appearing on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2005.

Koscheck refused to commit about his future after suffering his fifth consecutive loss.
