UFC 176 canceled

For the second time in the organization’s modern era, the Ultimate Fighting Championship has canceled an event.

UFC 176, scheduled for Aug. 2 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, will not happen after featherweight champion Jose Aldo had to pull out of a main event title defense against Chad Mendes last week.

With a suitable replacement bout unable to be booked, UFC officials decided Tuesday evening to scrap the card.

An official announcement from the organization says the event has been “postponed.” The rest of the fights on the card will be rescheduled for upcoming events.

The statement also indicated the next pay-per-view card, scheduled for Aug. 30 in Sacramento, Calif., will still be called UFC 177.

Fans who have already purchased tickets for UFC 176 can get refunds from the original point of purchase.

The fight between Aldo and Mendes will be rescheduled for later in the year. UFC president Dana White said over the weekend Aldo would be ready to fight “about 45 days” after the originally scheduled bout.

UFC 151, which was supposed to take place on Sept. 1, 2012, was also canceled. At that time, Dan Henderson was forced to pull out of a main event title bout against light heavyweight champ Jon Jones just more than a week before the event.
