MMA Rankings: Stipe Miocic tightens grip on top spot at heavyweight
September 14, 2016 - 5:09 am
Stipe Miocic retained the UFC heavyweight title and his spot atop the heavyweight rankings with a first-round knockout of Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 203 in Cleveland on Saturday.
The impressive victory also helped him move up a spot in the pound-for-pound list in the latest installment of CoveringTheCage.com’s rankings.
Former champion Fabricio Werdum wasn’t able to hold on to his spot despite a unanimous decision victory over Travis Browne.
After a lackluster performance, Werdum fell to No. 3 as he was leapfrogged by the idle Cain Velasquez even though Werdum took the belt from Velasquez last year.
Velasquez was dominant in a win over Browne in July, while Werdum was never able to put him away.
The biggest mover of the week was Jessica Andrade, who jumped six spots in the women’s strawweight division after a second impressive performance since dropping 20 pounds from bantamweight.
She proved a force to be reckoned with in her new weight class with a dominant victory over Joanne Calderwood.
Feel free to share any disagreements and stay tuned for the latest updates. Keep in mind, while the ranked weight classes are those used by the UFC, fighters competing outside the organization are eligible.
