Las Vegan Roy Nelson scores knock out UFC win in Abu Dhabi

Las Vegan Roy Nelson knocked out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round of a heavyweight bout that served as the main event of an Ultimate Fighting Championship card in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Also on the UFC Fight Night 39 card, Clay Guida outworked Tatsuya Kawajiri for essentially the entire 15 minutes on his way to a unanimous decision victory in a featherweight bout.

Nelson dropped Nogueira with his right hand two times early on in the fight, only to see the former interim champion get back to his feet. After dropping Nogueira yet again with a looping right hook, Nelson triumphantly raised his hand and walked away as Nogueira fell flat on his back and the fight was officially stopped at 3:37 of the opening round.

The win snapped a two-fight losing streak for the 37-year-old Cimarron-Memorial alum.

Welterweight Ryan LaFlare improved to 11-0, including 4-0 in the UFC, with a unanimous decision victory over John Howard. Ramsey Nijem knocked out Beneil Dariush in the first round of a lightweight bout.
